Representation in the Senate of Canada

Canada’s provinces and territories are represented in the Senate of Canada based on regions. The Senate of Canada has 105 members. Each of the four major regions of the country have 24 seats — Ontario, Quebec, the Maritimes, and the West. The seats belonging to Newfoundland and Labrador, Northwest Territories, Yukon, and Nunavut are assigned separately from these regions.

All senators are appointed by the Governor General on the advice of the Prime Minister. Some senators, however, have been appointed after being elected by the people in their respective provinces.
